Susan's Diary:

South Cape Rivulet to Cockle Creek
Monday 21 December
9:20am – 12:20

Given we had such a short day, we decided not to set the alarm again, however, as expected, we were both up at 7am. We saw most of the others leaving the campsite before us, except for one group who must have left before we got up. We packed under the watchful eye of a pademellon – who kept moving closer to us, remaining in our vision throughout. He reminded us of one of our dogs – Smokey!
Luca said he was feeling a little weary and I was pretty excited, yet somewhat sad, to be getting back. Throughout most of the South Coast walk Luca and I had been feeling some effects from the Southern Ranges, particularly when going uphill.
From South Cape Rivulet we could see our last big climb – Coal Bluff – which wasn’t particularly big. It didn’t prove to be particularly tough of a climb either. At the top of the cliff the views overlooked Lion Rock on the eastern end of the beach. We started to see the first day walkers. After having a break we continued on, walking quickly for the first hour, particularly over the massive stretches of duckboard. We passed a man doing maintenance on the track by whipper snipping the area on either side of the duckboard. We thought about asking him to do some work on the Southern Ranges!
We saw a black snake crossing the duckboard and an echidna just off it. Two years ago lots of people reported seeing snakes on the South Coast Walk. I was pretty glad we only saw this one.
After walking so fast on the duckboards, the soles of my feet were starting to get pretty sore, and by the time the duckboard ended I was feeling tired. We pushed on, passing many day walkers, to arrive at Cockle Creek 10 minutes before the bus was due to leave. In fear of getting caught behind the bus on the road back to Hobart, we quickly changed, loaded the car and were off just ahead of the bus.
