Eriochilus |
Notes:- |
Identification is often fairly
straight forward, someone tells you what it is - it only grows at that
spot or it looks like the photos in the book etc. These were
different. Jones, states that there are a number of undescribed
Eriochilus forms in Australia and that E. cucullatus is 'possible' in SA.
Bates, does not have E. cucullatus growing in SA but has noted 3 types of Eriochilus, the 'Swamp' which we have not seen and 2 others, the 'Hairy Leaf, Woodland' type and the 'Smooth Leaf' form. The 'smooth leaf' form is different from the accepted Tasmanian E. cucullatus and is easy enough to identify - if you actually think of photographing the leaves, as all the Eriochilus flowers look similar to the casual observer. This smooth form is all over SA and the Eastern States. What does this mean for my Victorian Eriochilus are they too 'sp aff' ? We had posted 2 'Woodlands' types as to us they seem different. The Adelaide Hills version is generally more hairy and has a longer ovary section compared to the SE version. Now this means nothing as we are not experts but they seem to be different and in time when the work is done by someone to name all the different types I'm sure this page will also change. In 2012 during a trip we saw another hairy leafed Eriochilus on the Eyre Peninsula and have added it to the page for interest as it was next to the sea far away from the Adelaide Hills - however it's likely to be the same species. |
