No doubt you have
noted from the photos above this orchid is located in a cemetery.
Recent works have allocated areas for the native grasslands to be
preserved and others areas for pathways and gravesites. A burn of
the grasslands area was done 2 years ago and it's interesting to see the
difference in mowed vs. burnt areas - diversity in one only. However
orchids are also found in the pathways as well and these will be chopped
quite soon I'm sure - Remembrance Day is coming. Weeds are probably
the major concern here. We met a local man, some 82 years old and he
has been on the Cemetery board and the local Fire Brigade for years as
well as being a local historian. He was interested to see this orchid that
he had 'cared for' over time; he seemed not to have seen it before.
We had a long and very interesting chat about the site. He was also
happy about signs being placed to tell people about the site's importance
as he had often been chided about its apparent 'poor' upkeep. |
