Karijini National Park Fern Pool Walk At Dales Gorge |
Notes: We had a food shop at the local Coles in Tom Price and headed off to the Dales campground in the Karijini National Park. We were concerned as you get your site on a first in first served basis and it was getting late in the afternoon. If it's full you need to retrace your steps some 20 plus kilometres to find an overflow camp area. We were lucky and were given a nice site in the very backblocks of the campground. As it was still light we decided to head off and see the Fern Pool and Fortescue Falls at Dales Gorge. Initially we went to the lookout to see the extent of Dales Gorge and catch a glimpse of Fortescue Falls. The walk down into the gorge was quite easy as there were very nice walkways installed. As usual the drawback, if you can call it that, was there were lots and lots of steps. The original track could be seen beneath the stairs and I was quite happy to be not taking that path as it was steep and slippery due to the shale rocks. Photographs were taken at the various stops along the way until we reached the bottom. Here was the magnificent Fortescue Falls. It is shaped like a large amphitheatre, with the falls on the side. The walk either went down and along Dales Gorge itself or continued on to the Fern Pool. The Fern Pool area was nice and cool as it had lots of shade trees. The pool is quite deep and therefore bracing if you go for a swim. After a short stay we headed back up to the rim and looked at the gorge walls being highlighted by the sun slowly going down as sunset was fast approaching. |
