Grampians 3 Day: The Fortress and Mt Thackeray Loop Walk |
Notes: Day 1: Having done our homework and realising the last 2km of this walk is along main road, Harrop Track, we decided to do a car shuffle to save some boring bits at the end. So while 2 of us did the car shuffle the other members of the family group started at the Harrop Track car park. We soon caught them up and we all walked on together. Initially you follow the Management Track for some 600m before turning off onto walking tracks. In the is area you move through banksia and heathland forest. The walking track turns to the right and rises sharply, offering spectacular views of the imposing Fortress buttress and surrounding mountainous terrain. Our first overnight stop was the Deep Creek, now called the Oasis campsite. Day 2: A cold start to the day, but it did warm up quickly. We moved along a winding track which followed the ridge line for about 1km, at this point the track drops down the side of the range finally reaching a 4WD track which we followed to the Victoria Range Track. Here we turned north (left) and continued to the Mt Thackeray car park where we camped the night. Day 3: And, yes another cold morning for the start of the long walk back. At least it was 2km shorter than usual 15km. We set out along Victoria Range Track for the stated 7.5km till we hit the Hut Creek Track, we turned left and followed it to we reached Harrop Track and our cars. It was agreed it was a great walk and we should do more! |
