Overview: The Great Ocean Walk is a one-way long-distance walk extending east to west, just over 100km, between Apollo Bay and the iconic Twelve Apostles near Princetown. The spectacular walk weaves its way through national parks, coastal heathlands, wild rocky shores, river estuaries and windswept cliff-tops presenting amazing views - nature truly unfolds at every step. By Parks Victoria. For this walk we trekked west to east from the Gables Car Park finishing at Blanket Bay. As we only had 8 days and the full walk would have taken too long with our two young boys.

Day 4 to Day 8 |
Day
4 had
us walking to Aire River. I set off early with the boys and had
them almost across the beach, some 3 kms away before Luca caught us.
Ashley, our youngest almost walked the entire way which helped me a lot.
We headed on to Castle Cove passing through a beautiful section of grass
trees before reaching a great look-out spot for lunch. A great
spot for a family portrait. Initially we thought we might camp
here but we were feeling good so we pushed on to Aire River and decided
tomorrow would be a rest day. This extra walking was not planned,
but having lots of rest breaks we made it to Aire River without any
issues. Very relieved none the less. We camped in the car
camping area as there was no one around and it looked like a big grassy
playground. We spotted many koalas during our stay here. Day 5 was a great rest day. We walked to the nearby Glenaire Beach and then attempted to walk back to camp by walking up the Aire River, until this became too difficult and we returned to the track close by. We searched out the local koalas and also toasted our half melted marshmallows. Day 6 was a hot day walking to Cape Otway with the track remaining high above the beach. Even the sandy track was hot! So after 7.5 kms and only 2.5 kms to our next camp it was decided that the boys needed a rest. So Luca went ahead and dropped off his pack and returned ready to carry our eldest Marcus the last bit of the walk. I entertained the kids by adding straw to their hats to keep away flies. By the time Luca was back Marcus was rested and walked to camp unaided. At the Cape Otway camp everyone had turns wearing the latest in eyewear, that someone had left behind. Day 7 was the walk to Parker Hill. To do this we went past the Otway Lighthouse where we stopped so we could all have an ice-cream. A reward to the boys for their great efforts. It was a warm day so when we reached Crayfish Bay we took a break. This was the nicest swimming spot on the whole walk. The remaining walk to Parker Hill was easy. After setting up we walked down to Parker Inlet which was beautiful and had a nice creek flowing across the beach to the sea that was safe for swimming. The water was still too cold for Luca and I. Luca went out at sunset to take his last sunset photos. Day 8 was a quick walk back to Blanket Bay and the car. Camera batteries are now low, so photography must take a back seat for the last day. Thanks to Nana and Grandpa for the car shuffle, Uncle Mike and Nat for their company and farmer Brian for his hospitality. Susan |
