Our  Flight to Denver from the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport was scheduled for late afternoon, so we had a free morning in Washington.  We decided on a walk around the area we were staying in, Old Town Alexandria.  This led us along the riverfront to the local marina and then into the main Alexandria shopping street.  Turning for home after an hour's walk we passed the interesting homes of the area, so different from those in Australia.  Further on we came across a supermarket, Trader Joes which was exciting as they are related to the German Aldi chain that we have in Australia.  The range of vegetarian food was great.

A pre-booked airport transfer meant we had to leave earlier than we needed to, but it allowed us to have lunch at the expensive and interesting airport eateries.  Boarding the plane was better than usual as we got fast tracked, so we did not have to remove our belts and shoes and did not get xrayed. The flight took off without a hitch and continued normally until after halfway when the Captain announced we were diverting to Kansas as we were heading into a possible storm and the weather radar had suddenly mal-functioned.  Landing at Denver was uneventful and after some time we were issued with a meal voucher and told it would be a few hours before the radar got fixed (I think they flew a radar unit in on a scheduled flight from Denver).

It was dark by the time we got back onboard the aircraft and took off.  It was quite noticeable that we were flying in a circle and yes the Captain was soon on the intercom to tell us there was a hydraulic leak and we could not continue our flight and so we headed back to Kansas where the plane was escorted back to the terminal by the airport fire brigade.  As we were not scheduled to land back here, all but 2 of the carriers staff had left and it took 5 hours to get a hotel voucher and an hour to get to the hotel via their free courtesy bus giving us a couple of hours sleep before we had to be up and catch the next flight to Denver.

Back to the airport an hour before our flight and ready to go we were told our flight was delayed as our plane arriving from Phoenix was delayed in getting to Kansas.  Finally we boarded and headed without a hitch to Denver where instead ouf a whole day to tour the city we only had a few hours.  Building in some free time helped in this case.
