This is a small orchid only some 10 cm tall, growing in sandy desert type
soils. The area had been burnt in a wildfire the year before and is
now just recovering. We joined a few other members of WANOSCG to search for this orchid - we found some 150 orchids which is far above the single flower recorded for the location and I believe more than the known populations in total. The flies were bad and the temperature reached 38 oC. Over the next couple of years the number of orchids flowering will decline until none flower - we then wait for the next fire to restart the orchid flowering. |
