Purnululu National Park
Echidna Chasm & Osmand Lookout

Back

Notes:

Day 2 at Purnululu National Park was again a bright sunny day as it had been for the past few weeks.  We drove to the Echidna Chasm carpark and started the walk taking the Osmand Lookout side trip on the way.  Heading up the track for the Echidna Chasm we walked along the creek bed.  A rocky path that was not difficult but annoying to walk on.  Nearing the chasm the walk wandered along amid palm trees, quite unexpected as this was very arid country.  Walking into the chasm the walls slowly closed in upon the track.  At some points it was just a person wide and towering over 180 metre above our heads.  We came to a large amphitheatre where the sun shone down and was slowly crossing the area.  An off-shoot track takes you further along a narrow path to the end of the chasm.  Returning to the main chamber we watched as the sun traversed the site and left when we thought the sun was past its best viewing and returned to the carpark where we had lunch and then drove on to the Mini Palms walk.
